Armstrong World Industries, Inc. is a leader in floor products. From its base in Lancaster, PA it oversees the operations of 37 plants spread over nine countries and the 11,700 employees they employ. In 2008 the company recorded revenues of 3.4 billion dollars.
Along with its associates, Armstrong offers an exhaustive portfolio of flooring products for both residential and commercial applications. Its range includes laminates and linoleum, hardwood, tile and resilient sheet.
Armstrong's birth was in the humble premises of a two man cork–cutting shop in Pittsburgh in 1860. The initial products were hand carved corks delivered by wheelbarrow. The company was started by Thomas Armstrong of Scottish–Irish descent. He steered its fortunes, with old fashioned ethical values, through the uncertainties of the Civil War, factory fires, financial panics and fierce competition. In five generations, Armstrong has grown into the large publically traded company that it is today.
Armstrong's initial foray into flooring products was in 1906 when it ventured into manufacturing linoleum in a new factory built in Lancaster, PA. From then on it was one long success story with corkboard and fiberboard being added to its product range progressing to cork tiles, linoleum and vinyl flooring. Armstrong’s strength lay in constant research, development and diversification into its core strength of flooring products.
Today the company has diversified into acoustical ceilings and suspension systems, fine kitchen and bath cabinets. In flooring innovations it manufactures ToughGuard™ vinyl sheet flooring with improved durability and SwiftLock™ and ArmaLock™ locking laminates.
