Vinyl Flooring

Flooring Type - Vinyl

Vinyl floors are resilient and durable; qualities that make them ideal for high–energy kids. One of the more economical flooring options, vinyl is available in a wide assortment of colors and patterns that allow you to customize your floor to suit your living space. While vinyl flooring offers multiple benefits, it is produced using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a plastic commonly associated with allergy–like symptoms and even increased cancer risk.

Pros

  • Durable, hard surface resists most scratching
  • Spills are easy to wipe up
  • Damaged vinyl tiles can be relatively easily replaced
  • Moisture–, mold– and bacteria–resistant surface
  • Resilient flooring "bounces back" on impact

Cons

  • A smooth finish can make for a slippery surface
  • Though durable, some vinyl floors can still be scratched
  • Contains PVC which can be harmful for both adults and kids
  • Sheet vinyl may need to be replaced if torn or gouged

Kid–Safe Flooring Tips – Vinyl Flooring

  • Immediately clean up all spills, dirt and debris
  • Choose sheet vinyl flooring over vinyl tile flooring as it generally has fewer seams. Fewer seams means less chance of exposure to adhesives (glues) which may contain VOCs
  • Place vinyl–safe area rugs or mats in high–traffic areas where kids run or frequently visit, to minimize slips as well as increase the longevity of your floors
