Earth Day is today, April 22 and all around the world people, including us here at FindAnyFloor.com, are celebrating, honoring, and appreciating our home, Earth. Earth Day has been recognized for nearly four decades yet in the scheme of things, the global green movement seems to be relatively new. Ten years ago, most industries, products and brands didn’t display eco–friendly symbols and logos. Today, it’s hard to get a cup of coffee without seeing your cup of Joe is proudly served in a recycled or recyclable cup. One of the industries making a strong commitment to our planet Earth is the flooring industry.

Earth Day is more than just a date on a calendar for two of the largest flooring manufacturers Mohawk and Shaw. These companies are ensuring every day is Earth Day by producing eco–friendly, green flooring. Carpet used to be considered an offender of the environment but not any longer. Now carpet can be made from recycled content and many carpets can also be recyclable at the end of their life. The overall result is fewer carpets and other waste being sent to landfills. An example of carpet composed of recycled materials is Mohawk EVERStrand, made with recycled plastic bottles. In fact 25% of recycled bottles end up becoming Mohawk carpet. Shaw’s Anso nylon is made from post consumer carpet. Carpet is broken down to its original material which is used to make new carpet. This process is truly a cradle to cradle process. Instead of materials ending up in landfills, they are used to produce new Shaw carpet, without the loss of beauty or quality, over and over again.

Carpet is not the only eco–friendly flooring available. Linoleum has always been an eco–friendly, green floor choice as it is made with natural, renewable resources. Bamboo flooring is also a popular green flooring choice because it’s a rapidly renewable resource. In addition, hardwood flooring with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Certification) is considered another green flooring choice. EcoTimber, a green hardwood floor supplier, was founded in 1992 and just as the name suggests, was eco–conscious long before this recent push to go green.

Bona is another eco–friendly flooring company where each day is Earth Day. Bona Kemi produces eco–friendly floor finishes and cleaning products. It’s no wonder Bona is the company of choice for many manufacturers when it comes to flooring finish. Bona is GREENGUARD certified, emits no toxic fumes, and has a very low VOC content.

Though Earth Day is a great day to celebrate our Earth and practice being green, it shouldn’t be different than any other day in your life. In fact, you should think of every day as Earth Day. We only have one planet to call home so we need to spend every day preserving what we can of it. When choosing flooring products for your home, do some research and see how your flooring choice will contribute to a healthier planet Earth. Sustainability-Eco Friendly Flooring
The flooring industry is making a great commitment to going green and making the earth a friendly place to live, thrive, and survive in. Flooring is everywhere. We are lucky enough here in the U.S. of A to have flooring of our choosing, some eco-friendly others in the works of becoming eco-friendly and sustainable. I went into my local carpet store and all they pushed me on was the new Mohawk carpet, the eco-friendly kind. It's a big step and a good one from here on out. I went with the green carpeting.I also am proud to say that I am a public transit rider and do not use my car to drive to the store, I walk.
