Bamboo floors seem to be growing with popularity. This is probably due to the fact they are beautiful to look at and if harvested and manufactured correctly, they are also considered a green flooring type. One nice advantage of bamboo floors – they are relatively easy to clean and maintain.

Bamboo flooring isn’t that much different than other flooring types in the fact bamboo is susceptible to everyday dust, dirt and grit. Dirt can scratch the surface of bamboo so it’s wise to remove shoes at the entrance. It’s easy to remove loose dirt using a vacuum cleaner or simply by sweeping. If you choose to mop your bamboo flooring, be sure to only use a damp mop and not a wet mop. For those of you who might use Swiffer to clean your bamboo, you should probably take a look at our Bona vs. Swiffer face off.

While it’s possible to use a variety of cleaning agents on your bamboo floor, it’s best to use bamboo cleaner recommended by the manufacturer. Ensure that these are non-alkaline and not wax-based, both of which will damage the surface. When using such a product spread it out evenly and don’t allow it to pool.

Preventive maintenance is a good strategy. Mats placed strategically at entrances will trap the bulk of abrasive materials which are brought in from outside. A better method is to leave shoes at the door to reduce chances of abrasive scratching. These little precautions will help maximize the life of the bamboo flooring and retain its beautiful appearance.
