Founded in June 2001, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, overseer of the GREENGUARD Certification program, is a
third-party, non-profit green organization whose main goal is to improve public health and life quality. To do this, the
GREENGUARD Environmental Institute works with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an industry-dependent
Authorized Standards Developer to set guidelines for indoor air standards. These indoor air standards are set to improve air
quality in your home, business, or other indoor environments.
In addition, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute has created three main green certification programs – GREENGUARD
Indoor Air Quality Certification, GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification, and GREENGUARD Building Construction
Certification.
GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification
The GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification tests and certifies indoor
building materials, finishing systems, and
interior furnishings for low chemical emissions. This includes GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified flooring, floor
finishes, adhesives, sealants, paint, window treatments, furniture, and many other interior building materials and
furnishings. Even electronic equipment, such as computers and televisions, as well as cleaning and maintenance products and
systems can be certified under the GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification.
GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification
The GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification program is similar to GREENGUARD’S Indoor Air Quality
Certification, but
pays close attention to the sensitive needs of children and the unique building characteristics of schools. To date, the
GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification is the most rigorous GREENGUARD product certification available.
GREENGUARD Building Construction Certification
The GREENGUARD Building Construction Certification specializes in
mold prevention for newly built multi-family dwellings
and commercial structures by setting guidelines for building design and construction. By building structures that are
GREENGUARD Building Construction Certified, you are not only protecting the inhabitants from mold growth, but also protect
the insurer, lender, and those who developed the building design from mold related losses.
