Environmental issues are of real concern, prompting the governments of all countries in the world to take immediate pro–active steps toward protecting the planet's environment and natural resources. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is an organization committed to promoting and encouraging eco–friendly and green measures in all aspects of the building industry. Spreading awareness of their mission is one such endeavor in achieving their goal.

One technique adopted by USGBC is a partnership with college and university students to lead by example with appropriate action on campuses. Across the country students avidly pursue issues of sustainability on campuses which spill over into their own lives. There are several imaginative methods in spreading awareness of these crucial issues. For example, one could run an energy audit on a residence hall or organize a recycling campaign in various departments on campus. Such measures would be in keeping with measures advocated in the USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. USGBC has started these procedures to help students develop leadership strengths and encourage creativity. USGBC gives the initial impetus but invites creative ideas and suggestions from student groups to green a community and campus.

USGBC students belong to any discipline who come together to learn more and promote USGBC's primary vision. This is to recreate the traditional manner of building design, construction and operation. The objective is to engender a more responsible and healthy environment which will enrich the quality of life.

USGBC students are bodies of university and college based students that will be recognized and chartered on university and college campuses throughout the country.

The anticipated benefits of the USGBC student groups are:

LEED Workshops

Currently–enrolled full–time students will be eligible for a reduced student rate of $150 for LEED workshop registration.

Reference Guides

LEED reference guides will be made available to students at a heavily discounted price. This will be $99 for students compared to $200 for non–members and $150 for members.

Greenbuild International Conference and Expo

Young professionals and students can attend Greenbuild for $225. This special price is available only to students of 25 years and below who are currently enrolled. The price offered is $375 below the regular member price.

USGBC Chapter Network Involvement

USGBC has 79 chapters and affiliates across the US where student participation is strongly welcomed. Such networking gives students the opportunity to interact with green building experts and know of community resources. USGBC offers several avenues in leadership training with most chapters offering substantial student discounts to membership and chapter meetings. Many chapters host special chapter programs and events so young professionals can join and participate in Emerging Green Builders committees.

Green Campus Campaign Resources

Student resources from Green Campus Campaigns and other partners are available to USGBC students as they begin their own campaign initiative to green and promote sustainability. These will include a USGBC Student's toolkit, LEED advocacy and training, leadership opportunities and several other resources and tools.
