Prevention, Care and Maintenance

  • Quickly clean up liquids and spills to prevent your floor from swelling, cupping or becoming discolored. Always remember to dry bamboo flooring thoroughly.
  • Use mats or rugs in areas with high traffic or where spills could occur, such as kitchens, entranceways, or room doors.
  • Ensure area rugs and mats are colorfast. Dye may bleed and permanently stain bamboo flooring.
  • Avoid area rugs or mats with rubber bottoms. Rubber can cause scuffing, trap moisture and prevent bamboo flooring from being able to 'breathe'.
  • Keep all mats clean and dry. Be sure to check underneath often for buildup of moisture or dirt.
  • Remove high–heeled shoes before walking on bamboo floors to prevent dings and dents.
  • Keep the nails of your pets trimmed or cap their claws to minimize scratches.
  • Use thick fabric or felt (sticky–back) protective pads under the edges of floor cupboards or along the bottoms of furniture legs (chairs, tables, couches, etc.) to prevent gouges.
  • Casters are small wheels on a swivel, set under a piece of furniture or machinery. They can be made narrow, and/or with metal or rough plastic that can cause denting. To help minimize denting, replace all casters with floor protectors or wide, fabric-covered casters.
  • Bamboo floors can fade a little over time. Moving rugs, furniture and other coverings regularly will keep the natural color change even.
  • Use blinds, shaded screens, or curtains to filter direct sunlight and help prevent discoloration.
  • Keep your warranty by keeping track of your humidity. Home humidity levels should be kept between 35–60%, through use of a humidifier or dehumidifier. Too much humidity can cause a bamboo floor to swell, while too little humidity can cause the floor to shrink or crack.

Daily Care and Cleaning

  • Use cleaning products recommended by your manufacturer or flooring professional. Not doing so could void your warranty.
  • Before cleaning, sweep or vacuum to remove dust, dirt, grit, and pebbles.
  • Use soft cleaning tools, such as dust mops, dry mops and brooms. When mopping, make sure the mop is only slightly damp. Vacuums, especially those with a beater bar, are not generally recommended for most bamboo floor types.
  • Avoid using steel wool, abrasive scouring pads, wet sponges, mops or cloths.
  • Shake out area rugs and floor mats to remove dirt that may have gathered underneath.
  • Wash and vacuum area rugs and floor mats on a regular basis.
  • Follow directions and recommendations on floor cleaning product packages carefully.
  • Avoid any of the following: acrylic or other floor wax, oil soap, strong detergents, ammonia, dust cleaner, abrasive cleanser or powder, corrosive chemicals or other household cleaners.
  • To remove sticky spots, gently scrub the floor using a soft, slightly damp cloth.
  • Immediately dry any area which has been cleaned with damp products or cleaning tools.
