All my friends are using the hard floor steam cleaners - shark, bissell, etc. - on their hardwood floors. Their floors look great but I'm reluctant. Will this process harm my hardwood??

I recommend that you steer clear of steam cleaners on an wood surface,
Here is an article about steam cleaning and laminate. The same principles apply to wood.
