I agree, I would look at a floor with an aluminum oxide finish. You may also consider the hardness factor of the species you like.

I would also recommend you look into laminate flooring. There are some very realistic-looking hardwood patterns and textures available and they are much harder than any hardwood. You have to be careful with water, but you can't flood-mop a prefinished hardwood floor either. I went with laminate in my last house for the same reason. I have a 100+ pound Lab and two kids under 10. After 5 years of abuse we sold the house and everyone who looked at it commented on how nice the laminate floors looked.
