Is it okay to use slate on an outdoor patio in environments with freeze/thaw conditions?

I believe SOME types of slate are fine to use in these conditions when properly installed and sealed.

Most slates do not tolerate freeze/thaw conditions. Some have even been know to explode or fragmentize. There are a few exceptions so check with your distributer. I know Home Depot has a line of slate (special order) called Three-Rivers Gold which is suitable to freeze/thaw zones. Good luck!
