My husband recently lost his sight. We are remodeling our house to make it easier for him to move through without sight. What types of flooring are best for the blind?

RE: best flooring for the blind?
I am very sorry to hear about your husband's loss of vision. I guess the main thing is you don't want a floor that he can easily slip on. There are plenty of options in tile and stone for non-slip. If you are worrying about him falling, perhaps wall-to-wall carpet with a premium padding would be the best choice. Any other opinions out there?

Thank you for your condolences. It's difficult to adjust, but he is doing quite well. I'm wondering if something like hardwood with beveled edges would help to guide him through the house. He could put his walking stick in the grooves and use them to guide him along. What do you think about that? Would it be too slippery?

A prefinished hardwood floor with beveled grooves sounds like it would work. I don't believe it would be too slippery unless it was wet. There are other options such as cork flooring which is a little softer.

Thank you, Michael.  I will consider cork.  Do you know if it comes with beveled edges?

Yes, you can buy cork with a beveled edge.

We have a guide all about cork right here at FAF.
