Is there a way to do a moisture test without having to buy an instrument?

You will not be able to get an accurate reading without a moisture meter. However, you can take a small piece of plastic and place it on the subfloor and tape all edges and let it remain in place overnight. If there is a high content of moisture in the subfloor you will find moisture on the plastic.
