How do I calculate the amount of square footage needed to cover a room and stairs?

RE: sq ft. to cover room and stairs
If you are planning to install a hard surface then simply measure the length by the width of the room to get the square footage. On stairs measure the tread and riser times the width of the stairs times the number of stairs. Be sure to take into consideration the configuration of the product that you will be installing and make an allowance for waste. With carpeting you will have to make your calculations based on the width of the roll and the pattern if any.
