I've installed laminate floors over plywood subfloor fairly easily.  Currently I have hardwood floors that can't be refinished (with no subfloor).  The hardwood is not even close to level or flat.  In most of the corners it dips down a lot (more than 1/2").  Obviously I have to do something about the existing floor before I put down the new floor on top.  Will leveling compound be able to fix the corners?  The floor drops in one corner almost 1" over a 5" span.  I am unable to refinish the existing floors (the previous owners "fixed" the creaks and heaves by using nails with giant heads; and lots of them).  Any help would be appreciated.
