How do I know if my old vinyl floor contains asbestos and how do I remove it safely if it does?

RE: asbestos vinyl
Do not sand! Use protective clothing and a particle mask. Remove in large pieces and place in plastic bags. If your flooring is pre mid 1980 you should be concerned with asbestos if manufactured after that date most vinyl did not contain asbestos. If you are removing floor tile and it is 9x9 then it likely contains asbestos. If in question remove a small piece and have it tested for asbestos.

RE: asbestos vinyl
I would recommend asking a local retailer about the laws in your area. Some states forbid the removal of asbestos by anyone but a licensed abatement contractor. A flooring store should have the information you need and a list of contractors if necessary. This is of particular importance if you're removing the floor in a public building, for someone else, or if you have employees helping you. People go to jail every year for not following proper asbestos abatement procedure.
