I am having my dining room re-floored with laminate. Should I choose wide or narrow planks for a more formal look?

Wide planks in a darker color will give you a more formal look.

I would also use a tall baseboard to add to the formal look. I painted my dining room baseboards off white to contrast my burgundy walls and it added a lot of visual interest to the room.

You could also install 1/4 round that matches the flooring and this gives an excellent look.
