I know they make spray on products that you can find in the pet isle that will repel your pet from visiting areas of your home. You might try that, but I don't know if it may leave a residue on your carpets. I personally don't like the smell of them, so it repels me too

I had a friend whose black lab puppy not only tore up his carpet but his couch as well. I installed tile throughout his entire house, which is much easier to keep clean, and the dog won't rip it to shreds like carpet.

I'm no expert, but I have had excellent success with kennel training two dogs.
