I am looking for a unique hardwood floor for my kitchen that is very dark in color and will withstand kitchen abuse. Any comments are appreciated!

If you want unique, you should look into exotic hardwood. One of my favorites is Merbau

Look for a species that rates high on the Janka hardness scale with a dark color.

It depends on what darker shades you prefer. You can get boards that look almost black to those that are a deep burgundy. My favorites are Honduran Rosewood and Bloodwood.

Try Brazilian Cherry, Brazilian walnut, or Ebony
