What types of flooring would you recommend for a formal dining room that is above grade?

I would recommend an exotic hardwood that will give you a very elegant look for your formal dining room.

Depending on the style of decorating you have and the other floors that are installed I would look at hardwood, natural stone or a large format porcelain tile.

I would go with marble floors if your budget allows. They can create a stunning appearance.

I would recommend a natural stone such as marble, granite or travertine.
